Rainbow trout in texas

Each winter from December through early March, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocks rainbow trout in more than 1locations across Texas. The only self-sustaining population in the state exists in McKittrick Canyon in the Guadalupe Mountains. Although rainbow trout typically thrive in colder waters of the Appalachian and the Rocky Mountains , few people realize that portions of the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country offer some excellent opportunities to catch these freshwater fish year-round. For many winters now, the state of Texas has stocked a few hundred thousand bite-sized rainbow trout in urban and suburban ponds. They’re great for any fisherman, young or ol who needs to feel a tight line and can’t get to the coast or a big reservoir. The list of state parks regularly receiving rainbow trout stockings includes Lake Bob Sandlin State Park in East Texas, Blanco State Park in Central Texas, and Fort Richardson State Park in North Texas. Many of the state parks being stocked with rainbow trout have a free tackle loaner program on-site for anyone who needs it. The longest surviving rainbow trout population resides in Gruene, Texas.


They survive in tailrace areas below large dams such as Canyon Reservoir. Fifty years ago, Texas anglers had to travel out of state to find this colorful fish.
