Man is the predator of the puma. Beavers , another large rodent, have predators such as wolves and Wolverines. Pumas as top predators and will eat about anything else, including vultures.

It is interesting that a vulture will not eat another vulture, but other predators will eat them. Wolves, when working in packs, have been known to kill cougars in disputes over carcasses.

The Adaptations of the Puma Agility. A puma has four claws on both of its back paws and five claws on each of its front paws. It is extremely adaptable and able to live in a wide range of habitats, from forests to deserts. It is an expert ambush predator , an amazing jumper, and the second largest cat in the Americas (the largest being the jaguar).

The Puma is one of the most dominant predators throughout much of their natural environment and are therefore rarely preyed upon by other species. The puma , or mountain lion, is a solitary animal. It has been known however, for Pumas that are vulnerable due to sickness or injury to be preyed upon by other large predators including Bears and Wolves, and even other Pumas.

Pumas can drag prey several times their weight an given the opportunity, will hunt domestic animals, such as sheep, pigs, horses and other livestock.

However, they occasionally compete with other predators such as bears and wolves for food. During most of their lives, cougars are solitary creatures. They interact only to mate, which can happen at any time of year. Females can breed as early as 2-years old and give birth to 2-kittens at a time. As apex predators , no animal preys on adult pumas.

Puma cubs may be eaten by the aforementioned predators as well as other pumas , bobcats, coyotes, and large raptors. The Puma-Prey Simulator demonstrates the natural balance of a healthy ecosystem, in contrast with the changes that occur as a result of human encroachment. In a natural ecosystem, the interaction between predator and prey is a delicately balanced process. Postdoctoral researcher Justin Suraci monitored the behavior of pumas , medium-sized predators , and rodents to assess the impact a perceived fear of humans has on wildlife. Pumas ( Puma concolor) are also known as Mountain lions, Mountaincats, Cougars, Catamounts, and Panthers.

Native to North AND SouthAmerica, they are apex predators (no animal e … xcept humans prey uponthem) as well as keystone predators (they prvide food for otheranimal species). As their own predators respond to their fear of humans, deer mice and wood rats perceive less risk and in turn forage for food farther away and more intensively, they found. Interesting facts about pumas.

They are known for their ability to hunt large prey. Some larger cats even bring down animals as big as an elk or a moose. They can swim if they have to, but usually avoid the water.

There are six subspecies of cougar, of which five are found only in Latin America.

Scientific Name: concolor costaricensis. Where pumas are eliminate populations of prey animals (such as deer) get too big for the land to accommodate. As prey numbers increase, vegetation is soon overgrazed.

As adequate food supplies diminish, deer and other prey animals starve at massive levels.
